The word “weed” derives from the Greek root “kurro,” meaning grain. In the early times, marijuana was grown as a grain crop, and therefore, is referred to as the weed of the field. The weed is a perennial plant which thrive in fields and hedgerows, but its cultivation is now widespread because of global cultivation of marijuana.
Cannabis sativa, the common variety that is cultivated today, has come to be popular as well. In general, it is a small, fast growing, dark green perennial plant with a medium length flower stamen. The leaves are large and rounded at the base, dark green at the tips and white below. It is commonly found in fields and gardens, where it is planted to produce seeds. The most popular form is called Jamaican marijuana.
Another form of marijuana known as indica, the indica type is a short-flowering perennial plant. Its leaves are large, with a prominent vein that runs from the base of the leaf through the entire plant, giving the impression of three branches. The flowering time for indica is from October through December, although some grow throughout the year. The flowers are white and pink, and have a thick pungent smell. The buds are long and narrow, often resembling dumplings.
Sativa, or indica in common, is a short-flowering, medium height perennial that has a dark green leaf with white flowers. Sativa’s flowering period is from late fall through late spring.
indica and sativa are both grown for their flowers. However, indica has a longer flowering period than sativa, with an average time of two weeks. The flowers of indica, being shorter and more compact, are often cut more deeply than that of sativa, resulting in larger flowers. Many types of indica have a sweet, mild flavor, making them ideal for many culinary uses.
While each form of weed is often used for specific purposes, the seeds themselves are typically used in another way. The seeds can be planted on their own to produce seeds that are used to cultivate the plant, or used to extract the flavor and scent from the plant. The extracted seeds are then harvested, processed into various forms.
Marijuana seed extractions come in two basic varieties. The most commonly used of these is called hashish. The other is hash oil.
The most common type is the water-based (W-extractor) seed extractor. In this type, solvent-based solvents are used, such as butane, methanol or alcohol are injected into the plant, and the seeds are exposed to the solvents for about twenty minutes. The solvents break down the plant’s cells, causing them to release the oils and plant components, which are collected and dried.
The steam-based (SW-extractors) and ultrasonic seed extractors are different from the W-extractors in that they do not use any solvents at all. They only need to be agitated to loosen the plant material. These are most commonly used in the medical industry because of their efficiency.
The seeds from herbaceous plants that are rich in fatty acids, or chlorophyll, contain significant amounts of the chemical, acetone. That compound is usually called, “cannabis,” and is an essential ingredient in potpourri, hashish, and oil.
The buds of the plant contain very little acetone, therefore it is difficult to extract the compound from the buds without using solvent-based solvents, and then drying the buds using a process called steam distillation. This takes away the most of the essential oil.
The remaining component, called the essential oil, is extracted from the plant by heating the plant material above boiling point and pressing out the oil into a dropper bottle. This liquid extract can then be added to scented candles, bath salts, or other similar products.
