Regular Seeds Vs Feminized Seeds
In late spring many gardeners, concerned with limited space, start to grow small pots filled with regular seeds of cannabis. Most of these seeds are “indica” or natives, that is, plants that produce no other desirable characteristics such as fruits, seeds or flowers. These regular seeds are easy to grow in small pots because they have a large receptive area; thus, make sure you plant them at an ideal location. Regular seeds are also easier to germinate than those from other types of plants.
Male plants often produced flowers and seeds at the same time; this is called a stag. Mature plants are normally male, but occasionally females can be found growing. This is not common, but it does happen occasionally. Regular seeds are the result of crossing a male weed with a female weed, thus producing the desired plant.
Cultivation of cannabis with feminized seeds may produce crops with greater yield; however, this is not without risk. If feminized seeds are not handled properly, they can produce plants that are weak and delicate, susceptible to diseases. Many of the breeders of feminized seeds are inexperienced, and some have not followed instructions carefully. Breeders need to follow specific guidelines for cultivation in order to avoid problems.
All good breeders have followed strict guidelines for breeding, and it is for reasons of health and safety that these guidelines have been followed. Some varieties have had their feminized varieties tested for adverse effects on health and safety, and most of these tests have been passed with flying colours. Breeders should be careful with feminised cannabis seeds, as any wrong move could see their plants destroyed.
There are many advantages to be gained from feminized seeds, although these advantages do come with some disadvantages. For example, it is more difficult to control the environment through planting, and it is more expensive to cross a male with a female plant. These disadvantages are offset by the number of hybrid varieties available, some with stunning regular seeds and stunning feminine plants. It is also more difficult to cross male plants to produce feminized plants; therefore, in a way, feminized seeds become more special.
Many gardeners who are growing cannabis plants with feminized seeds are growing high levels of indoor bud, which has many advantages. High levels of intra-plant moisture and adequate lighting are essential for successful feminization, and high levels of temperature are necessary for successful cross-fertilization. However, it is difficult to obtain high levels of temperature needed to crossbreed cannabis plants successfully, and therefore feminized seeds are not as highly recommended for growing high levels of intra-plant moisture.
In addition, feminized cannabis plants have other advantages. Because females are physically smaller in stature than males, they can be placed in deeper parts of the garden where the physical size of the plants does not restrict plant growth as much. This is beneficial because when plants grow in deeper layers of soil that provide sufficient nutrients and water, they tend to be healthier, producing higher quality buds with lower yields. This means that high quality marijuana is produced with greater yields in less space, and this means larger yields for the gardener. The downside to this is that it means feminized seeds are expensive, and that growing autoflowering cannabis strains is more difficult, which may mean that many gardeners will not be able to afford the feminized versions of their favorite strains.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of breeding for increasing the potency of your favorite cannabis strains, so choosing the method that is right for you depends on what you are hoping to achieve with your personal collection, your growing needs, and the availability of specific hybrid varieties of cannabis. When deciding between regular seeds and feminized seeds or cloned seeds, consider the amount of time and energy you are willing to dedicate to your marijuana collection, how easy the process will be for you, and your budget. Most people who collect regular seeds will often be collectors who only have a few varieties of cannabis to maintain, whereas those who choose to breed and harvest feminized cannabis plants will be active gardeners who are growing a large variety of different species of cannabis. It is up to you to choose which method of collecting your favorites grows best, and which one is the easiest for you.
